WA's South Coast is a bit further away from
Perth than the more populated coastal areas such as Margaret
River. But it's definitely worth the trip. Along
this stretch of coast you will find white sands, blue oceans and
probably even a beach just for yourself!
Generally speaking, the further you travel
from Perth, the more isolated it gets. You'll find a bit
of everything in the National parks around the area. Cape
Le Grand National park is about 700km from Perth and offers
beautiful beaches, walks, fishing, swimming, camping and views.
It's not hard to find great places to explore.
We turned up here in the Summer, and
Esperance was the first place we stopped after crossing the
Nullabor. The change in scenery was very welcome. I
don't think the wind stopped once during our stay, maybe that's
why they built wind farms out here? I'm a fan of renewable
energies, including wind farms, so I was wrapped with being able
to walk around the base of the huge turbines in Esperance and
Albany.

Beach at Cape Le Grand NP
Highlights for me were:
- The coastal atmosphere, without the
tropical bugs and humidity like Queensland
- Bremer bay. We discovered new little
beaches around every corner and hardly anyone else around to
enjoy them.
- Cape Le Grand. Exploring
pristine beaches.
- Frenchmans Peak. The walk to the top
is rewarding and has good views.
- The Fortress in Albany. It's an
interesting bit of history. Built in 1893 to protect us
against attack from the sea. I wondered why they built
down here at the bottom of Australia, but I guess it made sense
at the time.
- The beach driving. In
case you're wondering, my little Subaru does handle the beach
driving pretty well.
- Walking around the huge wind turbines at
Albany and feeling kind of dwarfed.
- The little towns along the way.
- Friendly atmosphere
Negatives.
- Too windy when we went.
- Wanted more time to add to the list above!
