OK, so you're planning to travel some part of
Australia, see these pages for some advice. Lets start
with this:
Plan your trip
Sounds obvious, but planning makes a big
difference, why travel 1000 kilometers and then drive straight
past an interesting site you'll never have the chance to see
again. I hate it when that happens.
Don't be too rigid, allow flexibility in your
timing and destinations.
Guide books can be good, especially ones
specific to the area you're going to. But you can't beat
people knowledge, ask around before you go. Often the
locals know best, get talking along your trip and you'll find
the best stuff.
Make sure someone knows where you're headed
and roughly when you'll contact them.
We never book ahead and have never have any
real trouble. The exceptions are between Christmas and new
years, Easter, and at the occasional popular destination.
You can drive past a million plants and just
think they're boring, but once you start learning about your
surroundings things get much more interesting.
Think about fuel stops and if in doubt fill
up before heading off for the next town.
Remember....Australia is remote. I came
across a bloke one day in the 4WD. He had driven up a
track with an unprepared vehicle and got stuck. Apparently
he'd been on the track for most of the day trying to get out,
and now It was
getting dark. The wife and kids were not at their best.
Even though he had only driven about half an hour from
civilisation, he was
already a long way from any decent help, and was just lucky I
turned up. We got him out, but you soon realise the
consequences of not being prepared.
