Day 24 –
Hobart – lazyday

Today we left Bruny Island for Hobart in
preparation for heading into Wellington range tomorrow. With
not much planned we thought it would be a great time to go the
Cadbury chocolate factory and stock up on some of the essentials
but to John’s horror they were closed, which was really
disappointing and what made it worse they didn’t restart their
tours until 8th which was right when we were leaving
L
So from there we decided to find a camp site
close to the city to save us time in the morning seeming we
needed to pickup the key between 0800 and 0900, we found a
caravan park called treasure island which wasn’t really that
nice and I think the only treasure they have is from the $22
dollars a night entrance fee. It’s over crowed and windy and
right on the foreshore, we are staying for two nights, well at
least it’s a place to sleep.
After setting up the tent we went of to the
centre of Ho bart for a tour of the penitentiary chapel, which
used to be a part of the old Hobart gaol. It was a nice old
building which consisted of two courts a chapel and the
gallows. The tour guide was a nice old man, who was a bit
boring at times but it still was really interesting, it was a
shame that a lot of the building has been demolished to make way
for new buildings. Most done in the 60’s when Tasmania was
trying to avoid the ghost’s of the past by burning convict
documentation and knocking down gaols. I don’t know what was
going through their heads back then. The thing that was most
interesting to me was that the solitary confinement cells were
directly under the church pews, which is why the priest at the
time would not commission the church, strangely he didn’t like
the idea of prisoners being held underneath while you attended
the church service!
From there we decided to go to the movies to
watch Casino Royal, the new James Bond movie which was John’s
choice. The movie was typical James Bond style, VERY
predictable and to John’s disgust it had romance. It was a bit
all over the place John didn’t really get the plot, but it was
an ok movie but defiantly something you could see on video.
After the movie we made our way back to the
camp ground, on the way looking for wireless internet access,
which at first we thought we would not be able find. We drove
up and down streets and found heaps of internet connections from
houses and businesses, but most were properly encrypted and
locked out. We were starting to think that our neighbour at
home was the only silly person who does not have their internet
locked, but what do you know we found one. We made a few banking
transactions and sent Ben an email which we sent in a hurry
because we were out the front of the person’s house, and when
people started coming home we got a bit spooked and finished up
quickly.
Now finishing up getting up early to start
our day tomorrow.
