The Currawong was
still hungry in the morning , so we gave him a weetbix to keep
him going for the day, he thought it was great. We ate our
breakfast cereal too, and went into town to the Ranger station,
because the track into Mt McCall requires a key and permit to go
into the world heritage area. Unfortunately it is Sunday and
there was no one at the Ranger station, so we did another track
in the area.
We went up the Mt Huxley track, which climbed
up the side of the mountains towards Mt Huxley, the track seemed
to be made of rock, usually with lots of grip with some bumpy
bits and eroded holes thrown in, overall the track looked
scarier than it really was. There were great views along the
way looking out over Queenstown, Lake Burbury, and big mines in
the distance. The whole area was mountainous, with low shrubs
and bushes covering most hills, with exposed rocks at the peaks,
that is if you could see them through the cloud. It was nice
and I was happy to have had a bit of challenging 4WDing. We
snacked on cashews at the end of the track, and again stopped on
the way back overlooking Queenstown to eat some cheese spread
sandwiches for lunch.
We finished by early afternoon, and thought
about what to do next, event ually after stocking up on food
again, we drove to Darwin dam, but found the camping around
there was only for vehicles, not much good for tents, so we decided to go to
Strahan to spend a day around there, which also meant we could
call the Ranger in Queenstown in advance.
We got to Strahan, and kept driving thorough
to Macquarie heads. We found a nice spot to camp amongst pine
trees. We were happy to find no bugs, but soon noticed that
leaches were attaching themselves to us every now and then which
sent Jo silly. We had some pasta for tea, and went to bed.
